Store NiMh batteries with minimal charge (allow to discharge). NiMh batteries lose about half their charge per month even when they are not being used, so recharge before each use.
NiCd batteries also lose their charge in storage, but not as quickly as NiMh batteries.
Caution - Li-ion Cells
Li-Ion cells can cause fire if allowed to charge or discharge too fast - if the is current too high.

Renewing a Laptop battery pack.
The cells inside a worn out Laptop battery pack can be replaced.
The result can be as good as or better than the original.
This can be a cheaper option, but very valuable, if the original pack is no longer available.
